Welcome Committees Program & Instructions Venue Welcome Committees Organizing Technical Program Venue Silver Sponsor: Chevron Technology Ventures Bronze Sponsor: INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY for INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY 2011 Conference, June 7-10, 2011 University of California, Berkeley Arthur Rosenfeld - Opening and Keynote Address Arthur H. Rosenfeld, Distinguished Scientist Emeritus at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL), was the last graduate student of Nobelist Enrico Fermi. In 1955 he joined the Physics faculty at U.C .Berkeley, and the research group of Luis Alvarez, which received the 1969 Nobel Prize. In 1974, in response to the OPEC oil embargo, Rosenfeld switched to the new field of efficient use of energy, and founded the Center for Building Science (CBS), at the LBNL, which he led until 1994. During those 20 years CBS developed a nearly universally used program for the energy analysis and design of buildings; electronic ballasts for fluorescent lamps (which jump-started the development of compact fluorescent lamps), heat-mirror ("low emissivity") windows, and many other technologies and studies. From 1994 to 2000 (during the Clinton Administration) he served as Sr. Advisor for Energy Efficiency in the US Dept. of Energy. He then served ten years as Commissioner at the California Energy Commission, and in 2006, notably, he received from the President and the Secretary of Energy, the Enrico Fermi Award for his contributions to energy efficiency. In 2010 he was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering. In June of 2011 Rosenfeld will be receiving the prestigious Global Energy Prize in St. Petersburg, Russia. In anticipation of the 2011 ISIE Conference in Berkeley, California Dear Friends and Colleagues, On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would like to invite you to attend the 6th International Conference of the International Society for Industrial Ecology, to be held at the University of California, Berkeley, from June 7 to 10, 2011. The conference theme is "Science, Systems and Sustainability," reflecting three of ISIE’s main tools, scopes, and goals. Many thematic areas have been listed on our Abstract Submission page to guide your decision about sending us your best work and channel the decisions about sessions at the conference. But if you feel that we have missed something important, do not hesitate to submit an abstract on it: industrial ecology is a constantly evolving field, and we want to keep it that way! We look forward to seeing you in Berkeley so that you have a chance to network with the leading academics and practitioners from around the world, share your views on and hear about cutting-edge ideas, models, solutions, and policy, and visit one of the most dynamic and interesting metropolitan areas in the world. We invite you and your family to experience the unique California spirit that has given the world the Silicon Valley as well as Hollywood, and continues in the best tradition of the "pioneer mentality" in biotechnology, renewable energy, and green enterpreneurship. As well, see for yourself the stunning natural beauty of the Pacific Ocean, redwoods and hills, and Napa Valley vineyards. Welcome to the 2011 ISIE Conference! Arpad Horvath Conference Chair Photo credit:About ISIE The International Society for Industrial Ecology promotes industrial ecology as a way of finding innovative solutions to complicated environmental problems, and facilitates communication among scientists, engineers, policymakers, managers, and advocates who are interested in how environmental concerns and economic activities can be better integrated. The mission of the ISIE is to promote the use of industrial ecology in research, education, policy, community development, and industrial practices. The field of industrial ecology has adopted and developed rigorous tools for assessing the environmental impacts of products, processes, industrial sectors and economies at local, regional and global scales. These include methods of life cycle assessment, material and energy flow analysis, applied thermodynamics, risk assessment, economic input-output analysis, and resource economics. These methods serve: in the design of green products and processes, e.g., green buildings, eco-industrial parks; in assessing technological change, dematerialization and decarbonization; and in developing policy to encourage product stewardship and environmental protection. The ISIE has a worldwide membership of about 400 scientists and engineers broadly concerned with the technical foundations of sustainable development. The membership, from academia, industry and government, has expertise in the technological development and societal progression towards industrial systems that are compatible with the functioning of natural ecosystems, e.g., efficient use of energy, material recycling, and non-polluting solutions. Many members of the society are advisors to national governments on matters of environmental technology and...
